Joe Riley facing lengthy spell on Shrewsbury sidelines after leg break

Joe Riley is facing significant time on the sidelines after a scan revealed he suffered a broken leg during Shrewsbury's 2-0 defeat at Oxford on Sunday.

The defender went down awkwardly after a challenge by Chris Maguire that stopped the game for over five minutes.

"Unfortunately for Joe, he was involved in a tackle during the game and almost immediately we realised there was something not quite right," said Town physio Chris Skitt.

"We took him for an X-ray during the game and it revealed quite a bit of ligament and soft tissue damage to the ankle itself, but also a break to the fibula.

"He will have to have an operation to correct the bone, it's a significant break."

Riley has had a frustrating stop-start season with injuries with no return date pencilled in at the present moment.

"We'll look to for him to have the operation on Thursday and the rehab starts there.

"It's hard to put a timescale on it, but I imagine it would be a serious amount of time.

"He's going to have to cancel a few holidays he's got planned, but unfortunately that's the life of a footballer, he'll have to cope with that and in the short-term he will need to be in getting treatment."
