Town's No.10 was selected in the Town line-up despite his wife giving birth on Wednesday having barely trained.

Following the ex-Port Vale's man influential display in last week's victory against Rochdale, Hurst including Dodds alongside Stefan Payne in attack.

But after an honest admission by at the half-time break, Hurst took off Dodds for on-loan Fulham man Stephen Humphrys.

"I got it wrong," said Hurst. "I played Louis and I shouldn't have started him. He trained Monday and had been off while his wife had given birth, so congratulations on that.

"He came in, we had a chat and he said he was fine, had a good night's sleep and was ready to go."

Dodds has 10 goals for Town this season and has earned himself a fan-favourite tag since his move from Staffordshire rivals and fellow relegation battlers Vale last summer.

The Shrews boss added:"I went with that on the back of what he can do for us and how he played last week (against Rochdale) but at half-time I'd gone in the dressing room while they all filed in and he came and said he was shot with nothing in his legs.

"I'll take responsibility for that one."

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury announced they had passed the 2,000 mark of early bird season season ticket sales ahead of today's (Saturday's) deadline.

Fans can continue to purchase tickets from Greenhous Meadow, while the offer - which means adult prices are roughly £12-per-game - remains online until midnight.

Chief executive Brian Caldwell targeted to hit the 2,000 mark before the early bird sale ended.
