Bernard McNally delighted to see Shrewsbury Town youngsters making their mark
Former head of academy coaching Bernard McNally is delighted to see youngsters making their mark at Shrewsbury Town.
Ex-player McNally was a former coach of Dom Smith and Ethan Jones during his time in Town's academy and was pleased to see both players make Paul Hurst's matchday squad in the recent win against Bristol Rovers. Alongside the prospects, who have both spent time out on loan this term, first-year and second-year scholars Ryan Barnett and Ryan Sears were unused substitutes.
"I'm delighted for Dom," said McNally.
"When you know a player personally you want them to do well. That will be a big boost for him in his own career, but also for the likes of Ethan, the two young scholars and the likes of Kaiman Anderson.
"Paul seems like the type that, if players are good enough – even youngsters – I think he's a manager that will give them the opportunities and feed them into the side slowly."
Smith, 20, featured 24 times last year in his breakthrough campaign under former manager Micky Mellon. Former Wolves youngster Jones, 18, made his bow from the bench on the final day of last season at Swindon.
McNally added: "It's great to see Dom and Ethan in and around the first team.
"Dom's had a little bit of experience going on loan, as has Ethan, and both of those players are going to have big futures."
