Paul Hurst still deciding between Shrewsbury Town goalkeepers Mark Halstead and Jayson Leutwiler

Shrewsbury Town chief Paul Hurst has reassured dropped goalkeeper Mark Halstead that he is not Salop's No.2.

Former-Blackpool shot-stopper Halstead found himself on the bench for Saturday's stalemate with Port Vale as Jayson Leutwiler – who had been away with Canada – returned between the sticks.

Halstead shone in a man of the match display the previous weekend at Sheffield United, but made a costly error at Fleetwood as the Cod Army scored their second of three goals.

But Hurst, who admitted the decision was a difficult one, said: "I made it clear to Mark. The general feeling and consensus that he's the No.2 – that's not where I'm at, at this current stage. It's two goalkeepers fighting for the shirt.

"Jayson's the one that's currently got it but he's far from done enough since I've been at the club for him to make a mistake and not suffer the same consequences as Mark.

"If I'm going to change every time someone makes a mistake then we perhaps become guilty of changing too much."
