Price of football: Shrewsbury fans getting great value for money

Shrewsbury supporters pay some of the cheapest prices in League One for both tickets and replica shirts, according to the BBC's annual price of football study.

The results, published last night, show Town have a competitive price structure in comparison to their rivals.

The cheapest season ticket at Greenhous Meadow is priced at £285, a freeze on last year meaning each game costs the holder roughly £12.40 per league fixture.

Only AFC Wimbledon, Bolton, Bradford, Bristol Rovers, Bury, Charlton, Fleetwood, Northampton and Walsall can offer better deals making Town amongst the cheapest in League One.

However, the club's most expensive season ticket, priced at £445, is the seventh most costly in the division.

Charlton and Chesterfield charge the most at £550 and £530 respectively. Millwall charge £514 and Peterborough £500.

But Salop fair particularly well with individual tickets. The most expensive ticket sold at Greenhous Meadow costs £22 - cheaper than any other club in League One – with the most popular ticket at the stadium costing £20.

Town fans also pay some of the lowest prices for replica kits.

A junior shirt, priced at £27.50, is the sixth lowest in the league. Bradford, Charlton, Coventry Northampton and Southend all charge £36.

Priced at £39.99, an adult shirt is the second lowest in the division and is only bettered by Scunthorpe who are four pence cheaper at £39.95. Eight clubs in the division charge £45 for an adult jersey.

Elsewhere, the cost of a cup tea is amongst the lowest in the division priced at £1.80. A pie cost £3 with the league average coming in at £3.15.

Match day programmes at Greenhous Meadow cost £3, the same as 22 other clubs in the division, with only Fleetwood priced differently at £1.

The study also notes Shrewsbury offer free season tickets to under-12s as well as members of the armed forces.
