Shrewsbury Town shot-stopper Jayson Leutwiler has been called-up by the Canadian national team for the first time.

The 27-year-old is Swiss by birth but has never featured the senior Switzerland side and qualifies for Canada through his mother.

The call-up will mean the former Middlesbrough man will miss a return to the Riverside in the EFL Trophy and will also be absent for Paul Hurst's side's League One clash at Oxford United.

Leutwiler describes his excitement at the 'amazing' experience ahead of him as he travels to Seoul for a friendly against South Korea on Friday, November 11.

The goalkeeper was contacted by the Canadian national outfit a year ago and paperwork to transfer his allegiances has finally been processed.

"I'm very happy, very proud as well," Leutwiler told ShrewsWeb.

"It has been a long process. I think Canada contacted me almost a year ago and we had to make the transfer from Switzerland to Canada for the paperwork and now it's done and I'm very happy.

"It's going to be an amazing experience and I'm really going to try my best there and just enjoy the moment as well.

"International call-ups are always good for any player, no matter which country. So it definitely takes me to another step and I hope it will help me for the rest of the season as well."

Meanwhile, Salop defender Ryan McGivern has again been called-up by Michael O'Neill to represent Northern Ireland.

The 26-year-old has already been away on international duty this term but failed to appear from the bench for the Ulstermen.

McGivern, who has 23 caps for the senior team, will join in team-mates for a World Cup Qualifier against Azerbaijan in Belfast on November 11 before facing Croatian in a friendly four days later.
