Micky Mellon confirmed as Tranmere Rovers boss following Shrewsbury Town departure
Tranmere Rovers have officially confirmed the appointment of Micky Mellon as manager following his Shrewsbury Town exit.
Mellon left Salop by mutual consent following a poor start to the season which sees them sitting just third from bottom in the table.
In a club statement, Tranmere Rovers confirmed Mellon's appointment and also stated that his first game in charge will be their upcoming fixture against Wrexham.
Rovers chairman Mark Palios was thrilled to finally have confirmed the move following Mellon's exit from Shrewsbury.
"I am delighted to bring Micky back to Tranmere Rovers for a third time. His track record speaks for itself. He already has a number of promotions to his name and we are confident he will add to that record once more at Prenton Park. We are especially pleased to bring in a manager currently managing in League 1 and who sees the potential in the club.
"Micky knows the club and what the fans want to see. He will take over a strong squad albeit that it is depleted at this time."
Mellon was a player with Tranmere twice throughout his career making over 200 appearances and scoring 10 goals during both spells. He also expressed his happiness having made the switch to Prenton Park.
"I'm delighted to be at Tranmere Rovers and really pleased to be taking part in such an exciting project.
"I'm looking forward to meeting the players tomorrow and the fans on Saturday for what should be a good game against Wrexham."
Shrewsbury are now without a full-time manager, with goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne in charge for the Bradford City clash. He's already confirmed that he won't be running for the Salop job on a full-time basis.
The bookies favourites for the Shrewsbury job include Ian Holloway, Tony Mowbray and former Wolves boss Kenny Jackett. It's understood that former Bristol City manager and initial favourite Steve Cotterill isn't interested in taking over.
