Appointed in May 2014 with former caretaker manager Michael Jackson working alongside him. Mellon took over from Graham Turner following Shrewsbury's relegation to league two and made 16 signings over the close season.

Life with Salop started brightly for Mellon, going unbeaten during his first month of his first season. League Cup wins over Blackpool and Leicester City were notable highlights at the beginning of his tenure.

Taking on Jose Mourinho

The most memorable night in Mellon's Salop career came as Mourinho's to-be champions visited Greenhous Meadow in the Capital One Cup for a place in the quarter-final.

Extra stands were erected at the Meadow, resulting in a bulging attendance of 10,210. Didier Drogba broke the deadlock just after half-time, but Andy Mangan levelled 13 minutes before time.

The stands erupted, but an unfortunate Jermaine Grandison own-goal five minutes later sent Town out.

Promotion success

Throughout Mellon's first season, Salop performed consistently - quickly rising to the right side of the table.

But arguably their biggest game during the promotion push came up against fellow high-flyers Portsmouth. Two goals from loanee Bobby Grant moved Salop within two points of leaders Burton and was a real boost in their hopes for automatic promotion. Portsmouth were well-fancied themselves for a late charge and the win was one of the more crucial three points collected by the boss.

Shrewsbury were eventually promoted following a win over Cheltenham Town.

FA Cup Heroics

There was more success for Mellon the following year, with Shrewsbury making it to the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1991. During the cup run, Mellon's side dispatched Championship opponents Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday before succumbing 3-0 to Manchester United during the first competitive fixture between the teams.

Relegation fears

Despite their lengthy cup run, league wins were much harder to come by for Mellon as Shrewsbury battled relegation. Salop eventually dodged the drop, finishing 20th - four points clear of the relegation zone.

A tough new season

Following the club's league one survival, many fans expected Mellon to push Salop up the table. But following a mixed series of results, fans began to fear another relegation scrap.

Keeping fans on-side

After the club's questionable start to the season, Mellon was eager to keep Shrewsbury fans behind his team. Boos following the disappointing draw with Peterborough further showed the fans discontent.

Mellon lost just twice in the league at home in his first term, as Salop clinched promotion to English football's third tier. But he was barely able to buy a home victory following that, his team enjoyed just six league wins in 28 outings since August 2015.

After 14 new players arrived in another summer overhaul, Mellon's charges have already lost four times on home soil this term.

Less cup success

Cup competitions weren't helping Mellon's case either, with a so far winless campaign in the much-maligned Checkatrade trophy not helping the club's morale. An upset over Championship leaders Huddersfield was the only win outside of league competition before they lost to Sunderland in the EFL Cup.

Time to say goodbye

In what proved to be his final league game in charge, Mellon saw his team draw once again, this time up against Swindon Town. In spite of this he remained defiant, regularly backing his players to get results.
