Salop head to divisional rivals and League One leaders Scunthorpe United in Northern Group G of the much-maligned competition.

And it was in the first game, when Salop fielded a second-string side in defeat against League Two's then bottom outfit Cambridge, that Mellon believed his team choice backfired.

"The first game that we played against Cambridge, we tried to give people a run out because we wanted to try and give them match time," said the Shrewsbury chief.

"But it wasn't a good performance and it kind of backfired on us, really. So what we will do is pick the best available team."

Midfielder Antoni Sarcevic has recovered from a minor problem that kept him out of the weekend match with Swindon.
