Micky Mellon: Shrewsbury have played better and lost

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon admitted his side have played better and lost this season as they edged a dramatic 3-2 win at Oldham.

The Town chief praised his squad's ability to clear every line and fight for every ball as Salop claimed a first three points on the road this season in horrendous conditions.

As rain heaved down all day, Town fought back from a goal down and went 3-1 up before Oldham - who went down to 10 men - found a way back into it.

But Town survived seven minutes of added time to seal the points.

"It was massively important to score before half-time," said Mellon.

"We weren't anywhere near what we have been before. I believe we've probably played much better and lost to be honest.

"But - in these conditions - with the results that we've had, and the manner we've lost them, it's about getting over the line.

"We'll fight for the entertaining football another day."

Town surrendered a 2-0 lead last week at Greenhous Meadow against Gillingham and the boss admitted that last week's circumstances would have played on the players' minds.

He added: "We've all been in football a while and coming into games when 2-0 up and lost 3-2 - there's no doubt you're going to carry a wee bit of anxiety from that.

"There's not one player of fan that has not had that result go through their head - it's human nature.

"At that stage really it's about just get over the line and get a result and move on.

"I could stand here all day and say what I'd like to have done better but really it was about getting the result and defending the lead.

"Showing all of the qualities you need to go somewhere like Oldham and get a result."
