Micky Mellon: Shrewsbury not good enough

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon accepted responsibility as his side sacrificed a two-goal half-time lead against Gillingham at Greenhous Meadow.

The Salop chief was devastated after Justin Edinburgh's Gills struck a 93rd-minute winner to seal the points despite Town appearing in control midway through the League One clash.

Louis Dodds' first-half double had Town supporters dancing for joy but Mellon's side conceded a poor goal to Jay Emmanuel-Thomas on the hour before the same player lashed in a rocket to draw the visitors level with 20 minutes to go.

Boos rang around Greenhous Meadow after Max Ehmer's deflected effort found the corner in added time.

Mellon admitted: "The dressing room was buzzing and now you've got the other end of the scale.

"Everybody will say the same as what I'll say, you can't be 2-0 up in professional football and believe that it's good enough to lose 3-2 – that's the bottom line.

"I know that, I'm not going to make excuses for that, I take responsibility for that, and it's disappointing."

Mellon was disappointed as his side were unable to recreate their eye-catching performance from the first half.

Salop looked set to build upon last week's victory against Chesterfield.

But former Arsenal prodigy Emmanuel-Thomas, on a season's loan from Championship outfit QPR, was awarded the freedom of the Town six-yard box to nod in a simple header.

While the equaliser was hammered in from all of 35 yards, Gillingham's winner was from a poorly defended corner just moments after AJ Leitch-Smith had passed up a golden opportunity to hand Shrewsbury the three points.

Instead Town sit 21st in League One and the boss added: "I don't know whether our performance dropped or they improved.

"The things that we knew we needed to do were very clear and we just weren't good enough at doing them at times.

"We switched off a little bit, came a wee bit loose, we weren't quite as aggressive. They're all things that we know now, but the feeling in my head at the minute is sheer disappointment."
