Mick Mellon delighted with Town character

Shrewsbury Town chief Micky Mellon praised the character of his Salop side after they came from behind to secure their first League One win of their campaign.

Town fell behind to a Jay O'Shea goal after 14 minutes but equalised through Junior Brown in the first period before Adam El-Abd's late winner.

Mellon said: "I've got to say one thing not in question is the character of the team and character of the players - that was there in abundance today. It was needed.

"There were things that pleased us and there were things that we'll work on."

Mellon admitted he was pleased his side were able to chalk up their first victory of the League One season, after previous good displays failed to yield three points.

He added: "It's important that we got that victory as quickly as possible. We all know how important it is and it sort've went the way I expected it to go.

"With half an hour to go you could see there was one team that had won three games and one team desperate to get the first victory.

"It's the certain type of feeling it creates for a footballer when you know you have to hang on and do whatever to try and get over the line and they've done that."

Salop kept Chesterfield dangerman Ched Evans off the scoresheet after the former Manchester City striker had previously scored four goals in four games.

Evans was a livewire all afternoon but was superbly dealt with by El-Abd, Ryan McGivern and the rest of the Town defence.

"I think there's no doubt that you're looking at a lad playing below his level," said the Town chief.

"He showed all of the qualities today so it's a real good test for our lads to come up against that and they enjoyed it and can feel pleased that they took part in it."
