Skipper Adam El-Abd: Shrewsbury must be tighter at back

Skipper Adam El-Abd has stressed the importance of Shrewsbury Town keeping it tight at the back as they get ready to take on early League One leaders Chesterfield.

El-Abd helped Town register their first clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw at Coventry City last weekend, but Micky Mellon's men then conceded three times in a 10-minute spell midway through the first half as they were beaten 3-0 at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

Chesterfield will come to Greenhous Meadow on Saturday high on confidence having taken seven points from their first three games of the season following back-to-back home wins over Swindon and Walsall, with striker Ched Evans on target four times. El-Abd said: "Every game's difficult, but if we can do the basics obviously and defend properly and don't give goals away, we'll have a chance of winning the game – it's simple really."

Central defender El-Abd admitted he was 'really disappointed' by the midweek reverse at The Valley as Charlton secured their first win of the season.

The former Brighton and Bristol City man said: "I felt we started the game well and then I think we had a 15 minute spell of madness really to be honest.

"We gave the first goal away. Their left winger's probably done well on their part, but on our part it was avoidable and he's punished us with a great finish.

"The second goal, apparently it's hand ball. I haven't seen it, but that's what the boys were saying in the dressing room. We were unlucky not to get it. Then, obviously, the third goal within minutes, again it's avoidable.

"From then on you're chasing the game, so a disappointing evening. We just want to put it bed and obviously go again Saturday because the games come thick and fast."

Boss Mellon said that Town have had some tough games in the opening weeks of the season, with last weekend's point at Coventry coming either side of League One defeats against MK Dons and Charlton.

Town's other fixture saw them beat Championship high-flyers Huddersfield 2-1 in the first round of the EFL Cup.

"We've had four very tough games," he added. "

Cut out the individual errors, we'll be fine."
