Dom Smith is grounded with Shrewsbury Town
Defender Dom Smith insists he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite a hugely impressive breakthrough campaign at Shrewsbury Town.
The talented 20-year-old, who has come through the youth ranks at Greenhous Meadow, was named young Player of the Season, despite only making his first-team debut in October.
Smith went on to make 24 appearances in blue and amber and, despite being rewarded with a new contract, the youngster knows there is a lot of hard work ahead.
The centre-back said: "I played over 20 games this season and I just want to keep proving I can still do it at this level and not disappoint anyone.
"You'll never see me being big-headed. I'm always humble whether it be just to be here or playing football, so it's nice to have and I'll keep my feet on the ground.
"Now my aim is to play a couple more games than what I've played this season – and score a goal.
"I need that to be honest and I think I'm owed one because I've hit the bar too many times.
"Even on my debut I hit the bar. I want to get a couple of goals and more clean sheets, as well, because we didn't get too many this season.
"We need to aim for more of those next time as well."
Smith admitted he was delighted to sign a new contract with the club back in March rather than have his future still in the balance in the final months of the campaign.
The Wales Under-21 international penned a new two-year deal immediately after the 2-1 victory over Coventry City.
He said: "It was less to worry about at the end of the season. If a couple of months ago I hadn't been signed, I'd have been pretty worried about what I'm going to be doing next season.
"But I was sorted out in February and now I can just focus on football. They've treated me so well since I was a little kid so I couldn't wish to be at a better club."
Smith often gets stick from his team-mates for the Renault Megane he drives, but the defender won't be changing it any time soon.
He said: "I've still got it and I'm not going to change it, at the moment. What you see is what you get and I'll never change."
