Mellon is committed to rebuilding the team this summer after the final match of the season, a 3-0 defeat at Swindon.

The 44-year-old Scot suggested his future as Town boss may have been in doubt last week.

He said he needed to have discussions with the chairman to see if he was part of the plans moving forward.

But after talks at the team's hotel on Saturday night, he gave assurances that he will be at the helm for a third season in charge.

He commented: "I can 100 per cent say I'm going to be here to rebuild this team. I'm happy to say that and I'm strong enough to do that.

Asked if he can bring League One game ready players to Town, Mellon said: "Yes, hopefully, we're working hard to do that.

"We had great talks on Saturday night like we always do and we both want to move the club forwards."

Mellon claims his stance was misinterpreted when he was talking about his chat with Wycherley.

He said: "People have misinterpreted me, which has really annoyed me.

"Out of courtesy to my chairman and to have good manners, I said I had to sit down with my chairman to see what we wanted to do in the future.

"There was nothing about anything else - I wasn't going to gallop ahead with a plan until I'd spoken to him. He's done fantastic for this club and he continues to be terrific.

"He's a massive fan and we sat down like we would do at any weekend and had a chat about what we were going to do with the club. It was never an agenda thing or anything like that."

Town have 17 players out of contract this summer while six loans are due to go back to their parent clubs and two are due to return in James Collins and Tyrone Barnett.

Regarding the retained list, Mellon said: "We're going to have a good five or six days again to let things settle down. But in my own head, I pretty much know where I'm at with things."

Mellon insists planning has already started on rebuilding his squad behind the scenes, continuing: "It's started - I think we're on with a few things already.

"We're spinning a lot of plates and we'll endeavour to make those happen as quickly as we can. There's a lot of work to be done.

"We want to make sure we get that done right with what we're coming up against every week in the league and we know the type of players we need to compete against that."

Two goals from Nicky Ajose and one from substitute Jordan Young sealed Town's second successive defeat and sixth loss in eight.

Mellon said: "We gave away crazy goals but that's been the story of our season."

But the positives were debuts for academy graduates Callum Burton, who started, and Ethan Jones, who came off the bench.

Mellon said: "It's great to get the young boys on their way and they deserved their chance. They can definitely be pleased with their contribution and that's good news for the club."

He made six changes as Nathaniel Knight-Percival missed the game and is set for a minor operation on his knee, while Jayson Leutwiler still has a back injury, Shaun Whalley was ill and Ian Black suspended.
