Micky Mellon: Town's players are scalps

Manager Micky Mellon believes his Shrewsbury Town players form a group of 'scalps' as they prepare to face title contenders Wigan.

Another sizeable crowd is expected at the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow as Town try to extend their unbeaten League One run to 10 games – their longest since a spell of 11 in April 1994.

They face another in-form team aiming to stretch their own undefeated sequence to 19 matches.

And boss Mellon believes rival League One managers are taking notice of his players, starting with red-hot winger Sullay Kaikai and midfielder Abu Ogogo.

Mellon said: "Life and football matches are going to change for him (Kaikai). But it's not just Kaikai. The same applies to Ogogo – he's a scalp now.

"There are more and more people paying attention to him as well. I know there are a lot of managers who would like to have him in their group – like I do.

"The midfielder against Ogogo knows all about him and wants to come out on top against him. If you come to play Shrewsbury and you're a midfielder up against Ogogo, you're going to be in a game.

"He'll take that challenge on and try to overcome it and he's building a very good reputation for himself.

"Jack Grimmer and Junior Brown are the same – all players who people see as a scalp, so they have to adjust and adapt to what's flung at them and come out on top."

Mellon is inspired by a phrase attributed to Shrewsbury-born evolution theorist Charles Darwin.

He said: "Charles Darwin was one of the greatest people to have come out of Shrewsbury and he said you've got to continually adapt and be prepared to find a way.

"We have that phrase up on the wall here."

Nathaniel Knight-Percival starts a three-match ban following his sending off against Port Vale and Ogogo is a contender to be skipper.

Mellon said: "He could count himself among the leaders, as could Richie Wellens and Zak Whitbread if he's OK, so there's enough experience."
