Red-hot Sullay Kaikai ready to up his goals target

Sullay Kaikai is ready to revise his goals target as he closes in on double figures for Shrewsbury Town.

The on-loan Crystal Palace winger's four goals in as many games has seen him climb to the top of the club's scoring charts with nine in 18 matches over his two spells.

Kaikai set himself a target of 10 when he scored in the 2-1 win against Coventry on March 8. But he is happy to up that total after his recent glut.

"Originally I set myself a target of 15, but with the amount of games I missed, I lowered it to 10," he said.

"Once I reach 10, I won't stop there – I want to continue getting as many goals as I can.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself because picking up points is the most important thing for me. If the goals come, they come."

Confidence is coursing through the veins of the 20-year-old, amplified with his classy brace in last Saturday's 2-2 draw at Bury.

But the youngster revealed it was a case of practice makes perfect.

"Every day after training I practise my shooting from different angles, so I'm always confident when I take a shot at goal," he said.

"Using both feet is something I work on and I was happy that paid off on Saturday."

Town have turned around their home record with seven points from the last nine at the Greenhous Meadow.

And Kaikai admits he can't wait to step out in front of the home fans again, with four of Town's next five games at Greenhous Meadow.

"I'm definitely looking forward to playing Port Vale," he said. "I'm sure my team-mates are looking forward to it as well because we're eight games unbeaten.

"The fans are really behind us – they're really urging us on and their support is really important.

"They give us that lift at home and we'll look forward to every home game, so hopefully I can score for them.

Town's unbeaten run lifted them to eight points clear of the drop zone but Kaikai insists there will be no let-up.

"That (safety) is what we want to achieve as soon as possible so we just need to keep picking up points and keep playing well," he said.

Shrewsbury got the nod ahead of a host of Championship clubs for Kaikai's signature and he admits he sees Salop as a second home.

"I just feel comfortable here and Alan Pardew (Palace manager) knows I feel comfortable here," he said.

"I'm enjoying my football and playing week-in, week-out is the most important thing for my development."

But he keeps a close eye on Palace, where he is determined to break through onto the Premier League.

"I analyse the games of the wide players at Palace but I'm a different sort of player to them," he said. "I just try to take bits from their games and add it to mine.

"My main focus is just on playing well and getting into the Crystal Palace team as soon as possible so as long as I keep performing, I feel that's where I'm going to be."
