Kyle Vassell backed to fire for Shrewsbury

Kyle Vassell has been told he will hit the goal trail for Shrewsbury Town – as strike partner Andy Mangan declared they can blitz Bury on Saturday.

On-loan Peterborough forward Vassell is preparing for the trip to Gigg Lane having failed to score in his eight appearances, despite impressing with his work-rate and power.

A prolific scorer in non-league, Vassell has netted only six times in 50 Football League appearances, although only 28 have been starts.

But Mangan is confident the 23-year-old will start scoring for Town soon.

He said: "I'm sure the goals will come for him, no worries about that. I've been in football long enough to know if you keep working hard and keep believing, the goals come.

"He's a goalscorer. He's made his name as that and as long as he's doing what he's doing – which is massive and actually under-rated – he'll get the goals.

"He kept doing it on Saturday and didn't score but it doesn't matter, it's about Shrewsbury Town."

By contrast to in-form Town, Bury, who started the season as one of the promotion favourites, have fallen to 15th.

They are just two places and four points above Shrewsbury after one win in five and no goals in two outings.

Mangan returns to one of his former clubs believing Salop can fill their boots in Greater Manchester, after going seven games unbeaten.

He said: "We're playing well, belief and confidence are high, and with the football we're playing we can score from anywhere. Hopefully that continues against Bury.

"I think any team in this league can beat anyone, despite whether anyone thinks they're having a wobble."

Mangan insists Town can't afford to relax after Oldham cut their nine-point gap to the drop zone to seven after beating Blackpool 1-0 on Tuesday.

He said: "If we were trying to cement a play-off place, would we being asked if we were going to take our foot off the gas? The answer would be no. You never take your foot off the gas.."
