Loanee Vassell keen to earn Shrewsbury Town move
Kyle Vassell would consider a permanent move to Shrewsbury Town – but admits he needs to add goals to his game.
The 23-year-old on-loan Peterborough striker wowed Town fans with a powerful performance in Tuesday's 2-0 win against Rochdale.
Manager Micky Mellon said Vassell reminded him of an old-fashioned centre forward.
Vassell is out of contract at Posh this summer and admits he is playing for his future.
"I'm up at the end of this season so I want to focus on finishing the season well and put myself in a good position," he said.
Asked if he wants to extend his stay at the Greenhous Meadow, he said: "Yes, of course. I'd consider that, 100 per cent."
Vassell has scored just six times in 47 League games and he confessed it's a record he must improve.
"It's all well playing well and giving your all, but my career and my chances of being in the team will be judged on goals," he said. "So hopefully goals will come."
Posh have a habit of signing strikers from non-league and selling them on in recent years, with Aaron Mclean (£1.3m), Dwight Gayle (£6m) and Britt Assombalonga (£5.5m) leaving London Road in big-money moves.
Vassell admits his own move from Bishops Stortford hasn't gone to plan but says time is on his side.
"It's not really worked out there how I thought when I signed," he said.
"But I'm a big believer in it will happen in its own time.
"I was a late developer in non-league and into the pro game so there's no rush."
Vassell, who has only started three of the nine games he's been available for, is one of six players who can occupy the three forward positions Mellon is currently playing.
And he admits the fierce competition means he needs to continue to be at the top of his game to keep his place.
"There's a lot of competition and a lot of strikers here," he said.
"The boys here are good strikers and they're more experienced and more composed than me.
"Scott Vernon, Jean-Louis and 'Mangy', Shaun Whalley can play up there and now Sullay Kaikai has come in so I've got to be on it if I want to play."
Elsewhere, Jermaine Grandison's hip complaint is ongoing.
The defender has not figured in Town's last two matches.
"Jermaine only took part tentatively on Thursday – he didn't take part in the main session," said boss Micky Mellon.
