The Championship visitors led 2-0 with eight minutes left but then former Aberdeen striker Scott Vernon scored twice, his equaliser coming from virtually the last kick of the game.

It means Shrewsbury have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three pre-season friendlies under new manager Micky Mellon.

Watford took the lead in the 18th minute when good work from strikers Matej Vydra and Troy Deeney set up Cristian Battocchio who picked out the bottom corner of the Salop Leisure Stand end net with an accurate finish.

Shrewsbury were neat and tidy in possession and were unfortunate not to be back on level terms when Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro bent a shot just wide and Ashley Vincent fired over from close range.

Both chances were created by impressive ex-Barnsley man Jordan Clark, among the most recent of manager Micky Mellon's 15 summer signings.

Watford rung the changes at half time and one of the subs, Tommie Hoban, made an instant impact, hammering a shot to the roof of the net after a left wing free kick from Daniel Tozser went uncleared.

Shrewsbury were unfortunate not to claw a goal back when winger Vincent's powerful 20 yard shot cannoned back off a post.

But they deservedly cut the arrears eight minutes from time with a classy goal from sub Vernon who executed a delightful chip over keeper Jonathan Bond.

More was to come as with seconds remaining, Vernon tied it up at 2-2 with another composed finish after fine approach play from Aaron Wildig and Akpa-Akpro created the chance.

Town trailed to Daniel Tozser's first-half strike for the visitors, followed by substitute Tommie Hoban's volley at the start of the second.

But two late goals from Scott Vernon saw that Shrews were not beaten, an exquisite chip halving the deficit in the 83rd minute, before equalising with a cooly taken finish at the end.
