The 21-year-old, who has signed initially for a month, is expected to feature in tomorrow's friendly against a Manchester City development side at the Greenhous Meadow.

Boss Graham Turner is delighted to have secured the services of Bradford-born Tavernier, who featured in Town's 4-2 friendly win against Birmingham on Tuesday.

And the Meadow chief revealed patience was the key in Town's quest to land the player, as he was expected to be loaned to a Championship club.

"He's one we've chased from the end of last season, but Newcastle thought he would end up at a Championship club," said the boss.

"That didn't materialise so we've had the opportunity to bring him down here now. Whenever we've seen James, the scouts have been impressed with him.

"He's good going forwards and he's a decent defender.

"He has had a bit of experience with Newcastle and from being out on loan at MK Dons, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle."
