Former favourite Shane Cansdell-Sherriff returns to Shrewsbury Town tonight determined to end the spectacular unbeaten record he helped preserve.

Town launch their home League One campaign with an appetising clash against Preston North End defending a 32-match sequence without defeat at the Greenhous Meadow.

Defender Cansdell-Sherriff and midfielder Nicky Wroe played influential roles in building that impressive record and last season's promotion from League Two.

But the pair both joined Preston over the summer and will attempt to put a dent in their old club's early-season optimism tonight.

"The boys at Preston know the situation (about the home record) and it's going to be a tough game," said the 29-year-old Australian, who was Shrewsbury's longest-serving player before his summer departure.

"It's going well for us at the moment, there are a lot of new faces at the club.

"We are working well and there is a good vibe about the place."

Cansdell-Sherriff spent four seasons at Shrewsbury before his departure, making 168 appearances.

And he is hoping that will earn him a warm welcome from Town supporters.

"It will be a bit strange to go back to a club where I was for so long but I'm excited to go back and see some old faces," he added.

"I will concentrate on the game but a good reception would be nice for the work I put in over the years."

While Cansdell-Sherriff was always likely to leave Shrewsbury at the end of the last campaign, he admitted remaining in England came as a surprise to him.

"I thought about my future for the last few months at Shrewsbury," he added.

"In then end, I decided with my family it was the right time to leave and take on a new challenge.

"I was very close to going backing to Australia or to Denmark, where I had played before.

"Preston was a bit of a surprise and came out of the blue but I'm delighted to be here and it's going well."
