Hot-shot Terry Gornell today launched one of the biggest weeks in Shrewsbury Town's history by urging his team-mates to grasp the rare opportunity to clinch promotion on home turf.

Gornell struck against his former club in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Accrington with what looked like the goal which could have clinched promotion from League Two.

Those hopes were dashed with a Bryan Hughes equaliser 12 minutes from time but that has set up the potential for an historic occasion at the Greenhous Meadow for Saturday's visit of Dagenham & Redbridge.

A Shrewsbury victory would guarantee a top three finish while a return to League One football would also be sealed if Torquay fail to beat Crewe or Crawley lose at home to Hereford.

And Gornell - fresh from scoring his 10th goal of the season - knows the opportunity Town face next Saturday will not come along too often for players.

"The ideal situation before you start the season is to get promoted and do it on your home turf and that's the chance we will have on Saturday," said the forward, who admitted his team-mates were disappointed not to wrap up promotion with two games to spare.

"This is why you work hard through the weeks and why you want to be a professional footballer, for days like this.

"The fans deserve it and we are unbeaten at home so we go into that game full of confidence.

"We will get our heads down and try and get the job done on Saturday."

Gornell also hailed the large backing from Town's fans with the 1,616 travelling support making up almost half the crowd at the Crown Ground.

"As soon as we got off the coach we saw them in big numbers walking to the ground and arriving at the stadium," he added.

"The fans have been brilliant. We are disappointed we didn't finish it off on Saturday for them but hopefully we can do it next weekend."
