AFC Telford waiting for answers from targets, says Rob Edwards

AFC Telford United are playing a waiting game over a new centre forward or two, boss Rob Edwards has revealed.

The Bucks start the National League North season on Saturday with a trip to York City and currently have one out-and-out striker in Matthew Barnes-Homer.

Edwards has made no secret of his plans to add at least another forward to his squad and gave minutes to Burton Albion youngster Marcus Dinanga and ex-Nottingham Forest man James Thorne in their final two pre-season friendlies.

And now the Telford chief insists the club have identified their targets and it is up to those players to decide whether they wish to join or not.

"We've made some decisions and now the ball is in other peoples' courts. I'm not going to rush into anything if it's not right for us," said Edwards.

"If we have to be a little bit more patient then I'm prepared to do that to make sure we get the right people in.

"We're working on trying to bring one or two people in. We've made approaches and now we're just waiting."

Supporters are keen to see a new striker arrive as the Bucks struggled for goals last season, netting just 38 times in 42 league games.

Edwards is aware of fans' concerns, but alluded to the fact time is on their side as they are not bound by an end-of-August transfer deadline.

He said: "I'm not going to be bringing in people that aren't going to help us – what's the point in that?

"They need to be people that are going to be making us better. At the moment the squad needs a little bit of strengthening but in the meantime I'm pleased with a lot of elements with the group.

"If we don't manage to get anyone in this week then it's not a major, major problem. We can be competitive with what we've got right now.

"As always we want to try and get a little bit better and strong and we're working on it."

Meanwhile, Telford are hosting an open training session and fan forum tonight.

A squad photo shoot will take place at 6.30pm at the New Bucks Head, the training session at 7pm and then the fan forum at 8.30pm.

Edwards, assistant boss Sean Parrish and chairman Andy Pryce will be taking questions from supporters.
