Greg Wilkinson staying at AFC Telford

AFC Telford United midfielder Greg Wilkinson is staying with the club – as hopes faded of landing new signings for tomorrow.

Halifax have done a U-turn over the signing of the former Manchester United academy youngster, who was set to join the Shaymen on loan for the rest of the season.

Boss Rob Smith said: "Halifax have pulled out because they weren't happy it was in the paper and that he was an out-of-favour player, at a time when the paperwork wasn't signed.

"If they want to sign him they can, but as far as I know it's all off."

Smith believes Wilkinson's on-off deal may have hit his chances of strengthening his squad for tomorrow's trip to Gainsborough Trinity.

He said: "Maybe it's not affected things so much financially, but it's taken time I could have done without. I wouldn't have thought we'll get anyone in for this weekend now."

Centre-back Graham Hutchison and striker Richard Peniket are available for what is the final game of their month's loans from FC Halifax tomorrow.

Trinity have lost three in a row without scoring, but their recent form hasn't fooled Smith.

He said: "Gainsborough is always a really tough place to go. If you listen to their manager's interview, he's looking at tomorrow's game as the one to get them going again.

"They've got two players out, which isn't as many as we've got out and some of the players in their team we couldn't afford to have here."

Telford are looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season after last week's 1-0 victory against Stockport. And Smith is hoping it won't be another false dawn.

He added: "It's something to build on but if we don't back that performance up it will have been a waste.

"That's the whole aim and we tell the players that but we've been here before. We looked a lot more organised last week."
