James Montgomery stays constant amid Bucks changes
James Montgomery is a rare constant in AFC Telford United's ever-changing team.
The Bucks' keeper is the club's only ever present and is likely to be one of only three players who featured in the 0-0 draw against tomorrow's opponents Curzon Ashton when the sides met in the first home game of the season.
Jack Deaman and Dave Hibbert are the others likely to feature as the others who featured in Steve Kittrick's side have either been loaned out, injured or are out of favour.
But Montgomery insists the revolving door of new team-mates has no affect on him or his game.
"All the changes needed to be made from the beginning of the season because performances weren't good enough," said Montgomery. "You can't help that – these things happen. In all leagues teams rarely have the same back four because injuries and suspensions happen and whatever back four plays, you have to adapt and try to get a clean sheet and keep things as tight as possible.
"So it doesn't really affect me."
Telford go into the game bottom of National North after three straight defeats in the league and 11 goals conceded.
But they are back to winning ways after beating FC United of Manchester 2-1 in the FA Trophy and it's with that result in mind that Montgomery will be looking to use as a launchpad.
"I think we looked a lot stronger as a team and as a unit in the last game," said the keeper.
"We seemed to have a lot more understanding and we feel we've got a lot stronger. So we'll be confident going into Saturday thinking we can get three points.
"Whenever we win we always feel confident because it gives you that boost – it's not three points but it's still a win and one against a team in our division so hopefully we can get another one on the board. Every winning run has to start somewhere and we're hoping the United victory can be the beginning of one for us."
That goalless draw against Curzon Ashton seems a long time ago now but Montgomery recalls positives from it. "They're a good team but we defended really well and we were unlucky to come away with only a point," he said. "They've picked up a lot of good results since – especially at home – but hopefully we can come away with another clean sheet but nick a goal or two."
This is the first of six games in 29 days for Telford, who are four points from safety. But like his team-mates, Montgomery isn't worried about their position and is confident they will survive. "We've only played 19 games so we've still got 23 to go which is a lot so of course we're confident we can get out of it," he said.
"We've got a busy period and the sooner we can get out of it, the better. You can't write anyone off at this stage – it just takes that run of form and we can climb the table."
