Smith expects yet more Telford departures

Boss Rob Smith admitted there is likely be a mass exodus of players at New Bucks Ahead after the releasing of Ben Harrison and James McQuilkin.

Defender Harrison and midfielder McQuilkin are part of Rob Smith's plan to trim down his large squad as he looks to balance the books.

Curtis Tilt arrived this week from Hednesford Town and the returning boss hinted there may be more to follow.

On the departures, Smith said: "We've had a couple go out the door and that is the way it will be from now on.

"We got Curtis in earlier in the week and that something had to give way.

"We have a lot of midfielders here. And we want James to play football."

Another name familiar to Smith hinted to be reunited with his old boss is former Hednesford Town defender Paul McCone.

McCone was a vital figure at the heart of Smith's Pitmen side over a number of seasons and the boss is a big admirer.

But the centre-half has been out injured for a number of months and has only recently undergone surgery.

"I believe it is the case that Paul has had his registration cancelled at Hednesford," Smith added.

"So he's been light training with us. He hasn't signed yet – he is a free agent. But he's receiving good treatment here with us.

"As and when he's back to full fitness we will see what we can do in terms of an agreement. He is a terrific player.

"If we can get him anywhere near the level he was at before then he will a fantastic signing."

Midfielder Danny O'Callaghan has returned to Sutton Coldfield Town on a short-term basis to get some game-time under his belt.

The attacking midfielder moved to the Bucks under Steve Kittrick, but Smith made it clear that the 25-year-old is still in his plans.

"Danny has already played a couple of games back with them and done well," he said.

"I know the boss at Sutton well and we'll be getting regular reports from how he does there.

"Hopefully I'll get to go down myself and watch him too.

"He's a great prospect and we might well need him back soon."

Smith believes today's trip to Bradford Park Avenue will be one of the toughest tests of the season, despite the start they have had.

Park Avenue are the basement side in the National League North, the only team yet to secure a win.

But the boss is not fooled.

He said: "They have a very strong squad there and from what I've heard so far have been very unlucky in their games.

"I'm not going to look at the league table at this point and be fooled by that."
