Shropshire Star

AFC Telford United 1 Wolves 1

Wolves' 'Bomb Squad' put themselves in the shop window at AFC Telford United tonight - but it was Godfrey Poku who caught the eye for the Bucks.

Rewind the clock back 12 months ago and the roles were much reserved, with Telford manager Liam Watson trying to entice the midfielder to Shropshire.

He had made Poku his top target not long after taking charge but the move never came off, leaving him out in the cold at Mansfield Town before this summer's release.

How Wolves would love to cut their losses on some of those on display last night such as Kevin Doyle, Jamie O'Hara, Tongo Doumbia, Razak Boukari, Kevin Foley and Stephen Ward.

They all have the security of terms at Molineux, a full-time job Poku was perhaps understandably reluctant to relinquish last year.

The 24-year-old is free of those shackles now and Watson knows all too well what the player can do, if they get him fit and firing.

If the Telford boss can get Poku performing to the level that he did from him on loan for 22 games and six months at Southport, he could be their star man in the Skrill Conference Premier.

For now, he's a trialist just trying to impress and he was, by no means, the only one with those Wolves outcasts playing up to the scouts in the stands.

Poku put in the block that stopped Kevin Doyle's shot threatening goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge in the 14th minute, deflecting it wide after Razak Boukari had pinged a ball through.

There the tough-tackling figure in the middle of the park was again to get in the way of youngster Eusebio's effort after the break, with the Wolves starlet ready to pull the trigger.

And the third time was a charm when Poku won the free-kick that led to their equaliser. He left for Mike Grogan on 71 minutes, his job done.

The game began with Telford chasing shadows early on, with Doyle warming the fingers of Hedge from outside the area from Anthony Forde's short pass.

The £5million midfielder O'Hara was left red-faced after being robbed by Charlie Barnett on 16 minutes, goalkeeper Aaron McCarey acrobatically parrying his effort away.

But Telford looked like a non-league outfit on 21 minutes when they shipped one at the back to Doyle, who was given too much time to rifle past Hedge from Tongo Doumbia's pass.

Boukari went off and finished up in the stand on crutches after pulling his hamstring, marking the introduction of former Benfica youngster Eusebio.

Doyle fired wide again just before the break, after leaving Akrigg for dead to collect O'Hara's pass through the middle.

The Bucks fight-back began after the break and they were back on terms on 68 minutes, when Telford-born defender Ben O'Hanlon bundled over Poku on the edge of the box.

Barnett's short delivery caught the Wolves back-line napping and Akrigg stole in to prod the ball past McCarey from close range.

It was nearly all Telford after the equaliser as they had chances to pull off a pre-season shock, McCarey coming to the rescue with six minutes to go.

Grogan muscled Ethan Ebanks-Landell off the ball in the box and squared to umarked fellow substitute Josh Hancock, the goalkeeper pushing his shot wide.

Wolves realised it wasn't going to be their night three minutes earlier when Liam McAlinden fluffed his lines in front of goal, Akrigg robbing the ball off his foot.
