AFC Telford's Wes Baynes has point to prove

AFC Telford United right-back Wes Baynes today claimed he has "unfinished business" in the Skrill Conference Premier.

Baynes was honoured by his team-mates at Friday's end-of-season presentation night, as he was won the Players' Player of the Season accolade.

The 25-year-old, who has a two-year contract with the club, now returns to non-league's top flight for the first time since leaving first club Wrexham in 2011.

He left under a cloud after a fall out with then-manager Dean Saunders, their relationship not recovering from handing in a transfer request two years earlier.

Rumours of interest from clubs in the Football League never materialised and he moved on to Chester, where he spent two years before joining up with Telford.

He said: "Telford are a big club with a great fan-base and it's good to be back in the Conference Premier. I have unfinished business there and it's given me another chance.

"Things happened when I was at Wrexham, but I have grown up since then and I think I am a better player. I feel positive about what is ahead and I can't wait to get started again.

"Wrexham are a big club but so are Telford, so there's no reason why we can't be ambitious. Every player wants to perform at the highest level they can."

Baynes admitted picking up the campaign's gong came a surprise, despite a campaign where he just missed three in 42 Skrill Conference North fixtures.

The club went on to claim their first title in 62 years under manager Liam Watson with Baynes a mainstay of their starting line-up, even if he didn't score!

He said: "We work as a team but it's always nice to be recognised by the rest of the lads, particularly as it's strikers who seem to get most of the headlines.

"The one criticism I would have of this season is that it's the first one in my career that I haven't scored, I am still getting stick for that from the lads!

"When I spoke to Liam last summer, he said he wanted me to play regularly and that's why I signed. He's been true to his word and I hope I have repaid that."
