The 'B' team plan is backed by Liam Watson
AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson today backed proposals to enter B teams from Premier League and Championship clubs into the lower divisions.
Watson becomes one of the first to support plans for second sides to join the Football League and Conference pyramids, which were put to the FA yesterday.
One option is for for these second teams to play in a league sandwiched between League Two and the Conference Premier.
Another notion is to merge the reserve outfits with League Two and the Conference to form two regional divisions.
Watson, who has just led his side into the Conference Premier, believes the new vision could actually prove to the benefit of the English game.
He said: "It's a fantastic idea, it should have happened about 10 years ago. Players at the bigger clubs don't break through when they are 18, it's more like 21 or 22.
"All of the 18-year-old lads at Premier League clubs should be playing in the Conference, they don't choose to do that and look at the amount who fall away.
"Where do all these lads go? They usually get moved on or released, because the division is full of foreigners. This would give them a better chance at their clubs.
"I can see the Conference Premier being split into north and south sections, in the future, and being supplemented by B teams. It already happens in Spain and Italy.
"Going forward, it should happen here. As a country, we not producing enough home-grown top draw players. It's competitive football that makes players better.
"I remember David Moyes saying a few years ago that he wanted to put an Everton team into non-league and it makes perfect sense to me."
