AFC Telford face a decision on James Smith

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson must decide whether to keep on-loan Southport defender James Smith for Saturday's trip to Colwyn Bay.

Smith impressed on his debut in Tuesday night's 2-0 defeat at Oxford City after being drafted in because of a right-back shortage.

Wes Baynes missed last weekend's 3-1 win at home to Altrincham after picking up a knee injury, but could be back by the weekend.

Chris Lever filled in against Alty but hurt his ankle, although X-rays confirmed there was no break, but he was forced to withdraw from the squad that went to City.

Smith went straight into the starting-line up after getting the call from Watson, who he played under at the Sandgrounders last season.

The 28-year-old signed on last month's loan deadline day under the proviso he would only link up with Telford if needed, otherwise remain with his parent club.

And Watson said: "I know what I am going to get from Smithy. He's been a steady player for me over the last few years and he never looked out of place on Tuesday night.

"The simple fact is that he knows the game and he's a good performer."

Smith won't be required to train with the rest of the players tonight, as the squad regroup under Watson's tutelage after their midweek setback.

The pitch at Marsh Lane that night was cited as a major factor towards a tepid display and the Telford boss believes they will have it far better at Llanelian Road.

The Bucks chief has challenged his players to respond like they did against Alty, days after suffering a club record 6-1 loss at Guiseley.

He said: "The players need to pick themselves up. We are in a position where we have got four games to go and it's down to them to do what they can do."
