A big year ahead for AFC Telford United
AFC Telford blogger Rob Hughes responds to a second defeat in a week as Wrexham defeated the Bucks and wishes departing Jon Brown all the best for the future.
Well, we got a performance out of Jon Brown – that was probably his best in a Telford shirt. Now it's time for him to go on a run of form and to keep his place in the team for the arrival of his former club, Southport on Saturday.
No, wait a minute; he is apparently off to pursue a life in the sun instead, as he emigrates to Thailand. Thanks for the effort, graft and versatility you have afforded us Jon, I'm just baffled as to why you played when your future lies elsewhere and you haven't started in more than a month, but hey, that's not your fault.
It just leaves me questioning how the players sitting out must be feeling, particularly Kris Taylor who I have seen do very little wrong in terms of performance when he has been given the chance. He'll snap at heels, put his foot on the ball and pass it. He has excellent vision and lots of the required experience at this level and above, yet isn't deemed worthy of a regular start in our struggling midfield. Like I said – baffled!
The effort and commitment that is back is pleasing, but Ryan Young stopped it turning into a cricket score. Blamed in some quarters for the first goal, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, being as exposed as he was, quite as often as he was.
Jordan Rose appeared to struggle through most of the game. Yes, he should be applauded for his commitment and willingness to put his body on the line – although I would be more concerned about his long term fitness, playing him through these knocks and niggles he picks up. A lot of Rose's play is excellent, though possibly due to the knock he was carrying he was caught a bit on his heels and, despite getting back alongside the Wrexham forward, he wasn't able to do enough to influence the end result.
We have players there at the moment, who appear to be up for the fight, now we just need to be a bit more intelligent. We need a plan, something to unlock the opposition. Grit and determination will get us so far but now we just need that little bit extra, a little bit of quality.
I wait with interest to see the result of this transfer window, but I can't help but think that we need to do most of our work in the next four days, before the arrival of Southport.
Back in the early season when our players were full of confidence we were able to go to Haig Avenue and grab a 0-3 win - we now need to complete our first double of the season by gaining victory there and get our first league win since October. Doing that will certainly lift some of the pressure that is mounting, especially as I sit writing this now in front of Sky Sports Soccer Special and see Barrow and Stockport doing their utmost to close the gap on us.
Hereford, Braintree and Southport – three teams we face in the next month, could be crucial, each will be big indicators on our ability to remain amongst the non-league elite.
Let's see us fans stand strong, united, shoulder to shoulder and hope that the coming events conspire to give us exactly what every AFC Telford United fan wants from 2013.
C'mon Telford!
