Darren Byfield to face pal Betsy in Woking tie

Byfield's Bucks welcome Betsy's Woking in the Blue Square Premier tomorrow with the visiting Cards a place ahead in the table, sitting 12th.

And Betsy has also raised the ire of Byfield by racing ahead of him in the Fantasy Football League they play in, along with Shrewsbury's Rueben Hazell.

Hazell and Betsy are both godfathers to Byfield's daughter Tiani and served as best man and usher respectively at his wedding to pop star and now ex-wife Jamelia.

But friendship has been put to one side with striker Byfield in the Telford squad to play a Woking side set to start with Betsy, who would revel in an away win.

Byfield said: "Bets is above me, at the moment, and he's getting a bit cocky, but he's always like that!

"In any game he's winning, he gets so loud, which makes it worse for him if he ends up finishing last.

"I hope that will be the case in our league and it could be tomorrow, as well!"

Former Fulham striker Betsy, 34, returned to his first club in February after leaving Wycombe and has been one of Woking's star performers.

Betsy even took Byfield along for training in pre-season while current Telford striker Kieron St Aimie, who is suspended, also had a trial with the Cards.

Byfield said: "I can tell you one thing, I didn't see any strikers there who were as good as Kieron, I have been very impressed with him.

"The ball rarely breaks down on him, he's a strong boy who can run in behind and his finishing has been superb.

"Now he has got a few goals, I hope the suspension will not break his rhythm.

"I have spoken to him and he's gutted to be missing this game."

Byfield started the season on trial at Port Vale, who were unable to offer him a contract due to financial problems.

Telford came calling the following month with a six-month contract for the 36-year-old and he made his debut against Lincoln.

That has proved to be his only 90 minutes so far because of a hamstring injury, but Byfield feels he's now back to his best.

He said: "For the first time, I feel I am getting closer to where I want to be. I expect to play more minutes, be it from the start or as a substitute.

"Last week, I came on a bit earlier than I had been; I have been doing my gym work every day and, in training this week, I have felt sharp.

"It won't be long before I am scoring goals and putting in performances. If I start tomorrow, I will be ready."

Byfield's move to Telford was thanks in large part to Bucks first-team coach John Psaras, who knew him from their time at Walsall.

It's the first long-term move into non-league football for the veteran forward but he's been impressed with that he has seen.

He said: "John must have rang me every week last season but I was injured and not fit. After what happened at Port Vale I rang him.

"It's not about money as you get older, it's about being happy and I am really enjoying it. The lads at Telford are brilliant.

"It's a bit different playing part-time, because I am used to pounding my body every day and I have had to adjust.

"These lads are part-time but their fitness levels are brilliant."
