Chelmsford Cup game was one to forget
The game at Chelmsford was definitely a game to forget for Telford, writes AFC Telford United blogger Dan Clark.
The game at Chelmsford was definitely a game to forget for Telford,
.
We had a brilliant chance to get into the second round of the FA Cup for the first time against a team in a similar position to the club we faced in the previous round. But it wasn't to be.
Fair play to Chelmsford though. They had obviously done their homework on Telford and exploited us to defeat us comfortably.
The Clarets were a good side, who used the experience of playing on their very tight pitch to their advantage.
They do look like a side that will be in the Blue Square Premier next season, especially if they play like they did on Saturday.
But Telford should have done better than they did. The Bucks did come forward and we did have our chances, but we didn't take them.
A positive aspect of the game came from Chris Sharp's work rate to try and salvage something before Chelmsford finished the game off.
Every time we went forward we passed the ball well and ran at the defence, but Chelmsford always hit the Bucks on the break, with the midfield not pushing back to support the defence.
Chelmsford took their goals well; a brilliant first goal from a nice bit of skill, an incisive breakaway for the second, and two set pieces for the third and fourth set up a comfortable victory for them.
They all could have been avoided though, and I'm sure that is something the lads will work on.
There were patches where Telford looked bright, though.
We had periods of good passing, however they ended up with chances that didn't test the keeper.
Our play in the first half did give the impression that something would come from our domination.
But again, as in previous games, we lacked that finishing touch.
At this moment in time, I would like to see Meechan back for his creativity up front and perhaps even give Jordan Johnson a go, as he produced a good display in pre season.
Even introducing Nathan Rooney into the midfield would be an excellent addition.
He has played well every time he has played for us and I would love to see more of him as a creative outlet for the strikers.
I am glad that it was only the FA Cup and not the league, because I would rather we finished off well in the league rather than have a successful cup run.
But I hope that this rather surprising result will kick start us to do better.
Yesterday's game wasn't easy viewing as a Telford fan, and I just hope that it can push us to be how we were at the start of the season and start showing that by producing a bit of form in the league.
Keep the faith!
