Battles at both ends of the table

Shropshire’s three sides in Division One of the Birmingham & District League go in search of victories tomorrow, but for very different reasons.

Table-topping Bridgnorth will be hoping to hold off the challenge from below, which includes tomorrow’s visitors Shifnal, while second-bottom Wellington will be hoping to give their survival chances a boost away to fourth-bottom Walmley.

Wellington held on for a draw with Himley last weekend, but only picked up six points, allowing Walmley to put 32 points between the pair by beating Moseley.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Bridgnorth’s stellar season reached new heights as they pulled off a record run-chase to overcome Attock, leapfrogging Shifnal – thrashed at Tamworth – to the summit.

But skipper Sam Whitney, who took his fourth five-wicket haul in five games, wants his side to remain focused on each match as it comes.

“While we’re on an unbelievable run, we still need to keep our feet on the ground,” he said. “It’s a weird league, anyone can beat anyone so we can’t get complacent.

“We need to keep playing our positive cricket and keep this feel-good feeling going.”
