Skipper Rob Foster has urged improving Shrewsbury to give themselves breathing space from the drop zone.

Back-to-back wins have lifted the London Road side into mid-table in the Birmingham Cricket League Premier Division.

And the captain wants to extend the gap between Shrewsbury and the bottom two before the change back to the win/lose format.

"The league changes over the last quarter when we go back to win/lose cricket so we need to keep ourselves climbing up the table," said Foster.

"We want to pull away from the bottom two and give ourselves a bit of breathing space going into the last few weeks.

"For the moment the objective is staying in the league and once we've secured that try to finish as high as possible.

"I don't think there'll be any chance of retaining the league as Berkswell are a long way ahead.

"After the way we started the season, our aim is to try to just keep improving. We lost a lot of players and had to regroup.

"We have the two lads away with England Under-19s (Ollie Westbury and George Panayi) and it will be tough for a few weeks while we are without them."

Shrewsbury go to Kenilworth Wardens tomorrow, the team directly above them in the league, looking to build on wins over Wolverhampton and Leamington.

"We played very well at Leamington and it was nice to go there and get 24 points," added Foster. "We were good with the bat and ball and it was a good all-round performance.

"Although we lost at West Brom three weeks ago, we've played really good cricket over the last month.

"We were hit and miss at the start of the season and it's taken us a while to get going.

"A few people have hit form. Mike Barnard is bowling exceptionally well at the moment and people are scoring a few more runs.

"The pitches are helping with the weather over the last few weeks. They've been a bit drier and more batsmen-friendly and that helps our cricket.

"Traditionally we've not done too well at Kenilworth, I don't know why. Hopefully we can put that right and get a win."

Ben Stebbings and James Hulton-Harrap are back in contention with 14-year-old left-arm spinner Lewis Evans, who made his debut last weekend, likely to miss out.

Foster added: "Lewis did well but it's very much a learning experience for him. He is a bright prospect and we decided to get him in and give him some experience."
