In-form Worfield are on the march with win over title rivals
Delighted Worfield captain Nick Hudson has hailed his team's best performance of the season after they defeated fellow Shropshire County League Premier Division title hopefuls Ludlow.
The match, at Ludlow Cricket Ground, had pitted the third-placed hosts against the side just below them in the table.
But the visitors leapfrogged into second place with a 146-run victory featuring two half-centuries and a devastating bowling display from Gagandeep Singh.
Hudson said: "It was definitely our biggest win of the season so far and our best performance by a long way.
"I was really proud of the players and I told them so afterwards. It was a brilliant win.
"Ludlow beat us twice in the league last season so to go there and give them a good hiding was very pleasing."
Worfield elected to bat first after winning the toss and it proved a fine decision as they made an impressive 256-7 from their 50 overs.
George Nock (52) and Hudson (51) led the scoring but there were also solid contributions from Gagandeep Singh (39) and Oliver Plank (47), who excelled in his second game for the first team.
Matthew Kennedy (2-35), Will Sparrow (2-38) and Ian Simmons (2-57) did their best to keep the score down but Worfield's bowlers showed them how it was done as they removed the hosts for 110 in the 37th over.
Brett Oliver (2-20) and Will Cook (2-25) both did well before Singh stepped up to finish off Ludlow's batting order, taking 5-17 including the last four wickets.
Ludlow slipped to sixth with defeat while Worfield now sit 10 points behind unbeaten leaders Reman who consolidated their place at the summit with a four-wicket win over Wem, who had started the day in second place.
Alex Johnson (5-37), Mal Serplet (2-25) and Dominic Bradburne (2-10) wreaked havoc among Wem's batting order which was skittled for 93 in the 34th over.
Skipper Ed Ashlin top-scored for the victors, his 43 helping Reman to their target in the 34th over for the loss of six wickets.
Wroxeter Grove broke into the top five with a winning draw at home to Newtown.
Guy Home hit 38 for the hosts as they made 179-7. Sam Cooke made the same solid total as Newtown then made 153-8.
