Champions District finish with a flourish
District A finished in champion style as they retained the title in Shropshire main winter league.
A 10-0 whitewash of Bridgewater on Friday night in Whitchurch saw them crowned top dogs again in the District Invitation Winter League.
Singles wins by Rich Lawson (21-11), Martin Lloyd (21-13), Matt Beeston (21-14) and Andrew Davies (21-13) were added to by doubles successes for Cedric Bancroft and Jan Wakefield ((21-12) and Rich Pullen and Alan Bailey (21-15) for a commanding 126-78 aggregate return.
And that led Beeston to exclaim: “It’s absolutely brilliant to retain the winter league trophy for another year. Well done to everyone who took part and good luck to everyone for this forthcoming season.”
District A finished 10 points clear of runners-up Malpas Sports, who had beaten Addderley 7-3 (124-101) 24 hours earlier in their final game.
It was a strange week for third-placed Bridgewater as they had whitewashed Wem USC on Monday night in a rearranged game before suffering the same fate on the final night of another successful campaign for the popular league after its change of format.
