Jamie Brookes makes call for early entrants
The booming popularity of the North Shropshire Parks Winter Series is becoming a bit of a headache for organiser Jamie Brookes.
Round three takes place at Tilstock on Sunday and, despite clashing with finals day in the £2,430 Wrockwardine Wood Open with its big-name field (preview in Saturday’s paper), another bumper turnout is on the cards.
A record-breaking 51 bowlers played in round two at Prees last weekend and, with the door open to entrants from all areas, Brookes has had to make a plea for help.
“Although it’s entry on the day, with the significant increase in entrants, early entry notification is really much appreciated,” said Brookes, who can be contacted on 07522 624773.
“Bowlers should report by 9.30am for the draw to be done at 9.50 so we can have a 10 o’clock start to the 13-up handicapped round robin games. Entry is £7 and £4 for juniors.”
Round two winner Gary Whitehall (Adderley) is the early leader in the series points table on 43, followed by Matt Beeston with 33, Graham Dulson 30, Ed Proudlove 28 and Jack Hewitt 26.
Monday sees the Shropshire Ladies Association and Shrewsbury Ladies League hold a joint presentation evening, with buffet, at Shrewsbury’s Meole Brace BC (7.30pm).
A fast surface proved too hot for Shrewsbury Indoor Bowling Club to handle in the second of their weekend friendly series.
It was a five rink game of triples and fours away at Tamworth and the visitors were under pressure from the off as they lost by 19 shots.
“The Shrewsbury team struggled from the outset to find their form on a very fast Tamworth green,” admitted club vice-captain Cynthia Hedley.
“As the match progressed, it was clear that Shrewsbury could not make up lost ground, despite adjusting well to the unfamiliar conditions and winning on two rinks.
“The final score was a loss for Shrewsbury by 87 shots to 106 shots with their best rink being Roger Rowley and Cliff Redshaw with skip Sheila Payne.”
Shrewsbury, having lost their first two games, will attempt to end the run in an away match against Welford on Avon on Saturday.
