Martin Gaut pleased see Wrockwardine Wood bounce back

Skipper Martin Gaut was impressed by Wrockwardine Wood’s bouncebackability as they recovered from a mauling to beat Moseley.

A confident 7-3 (149-120) home success was the perfect tonic to their previous 10-0 reversal at Broomfield, with the result taking Gaut’s charges back above the Birmingham outfit in the Summit League Feeder A standings.

Key to Wood sealing the victory was the performance of in-form Louise Cotton, who followed up her recent Isle of Man Bowls Festival final place with an important 21-18 success at No.1. Gaut believes it is the only time Moseley opener Scott Follis had been defeated this season.

The captain said: “We were delighted with the win, they’re a very strong team.

“We lost 10-0 the week before against a team around us near the bottom and to bounce straight back makes us very happy.

“It was pretty comprehensive, although their players that won bowled very well.

“I don’t think their first player had lost all season. We put Louise at number one for a reason because of her form.

“She had a very good game. We may change it up going forward though.”

Wood make the trip to sixth-placed Moseley, one place and 13 points above them, for the reverse clash next Monday.

“If we match their score and get three at their place we’d be happy.” Gaut said.

Martin Williams landed the MVP for Wrockwardine, downing Graham Hussey 21-5, while there were handsome 21-10 wins for Ian Delves and Tony Garmson.

Wrockwardine finished seventh in the 2016 campaign and following a tough spell of losing key bowlers, Gaut revealed that seventh spot would prove to be a satisfactory finish.

Meanwhile, Premier Division outfit St Georges fell to a 7-3 (150-137) defeat at Chadsmoor A. The result leaves them second-bottom, one point better off than Castlefields, who were beaten 10-2 at home by Greville Arms.

Lewis Scott, Nigel Evans and Glyn Picknell collected the wins for visitors St Georges.

Feeder B outfit Hadley United Services recovered from defeat at Chadsmoor B last time out by securing a comfortable 9-1 (159-96) home victory over Langley.

Skipper Jamie King was given MVP after securing a fine start with his 21-10 win over David Bell.
