Focus on bowls coaching as numbers decline

The driving force of Shropshire bowls coaching has expressed his disappointment at the number of coaches being lost to the sport.

Peter Carter, the county development officer, is concerned that the fall in numbers will hit efforts to introduce more people to bowls – young and old, able bodied and disabled – and whether they want to play competitively or just for enjoyment.

And in an effort to stimulate coaching and development in the county he has sent an email to the coaches that have been lost or he fears losing.

"I felt the disappointment in others in seeing the drop in numbers of coaches last year, which was quoted as 64 nationally," admitted Newport-based Carter.

"We gain a few and lose a few. The cause has been identified and we trying through our county committee to correct this problem."

But Carter insists he still has positive aims for the coming year.

"It is my wish all coaches undergo a full camera course in May – and it is also my wish to grow our school links programmes, as shown by the Mid Shropshire League and Shifnal BC

"Any bookings for coaching courses after May, I shall call on the nearest coaches as I shall be concentrating on the admin side, trying to ensure we are the best."
