Move to overturn a 90-year bowls ruling

Far-reaching changes for one of Shropshire's top bowls leagues are in the pipeline.

Four rule changes which would dramatically change the landscape of the Tanners Shropshire League are on the agenda for tomorrow's AGM at Bagley BC in Shrewsbury (7.30pm).

Member clubs have only ever been allowed to field one team in the main Friday divisions since the league's launch 90 years ago.

But Bayston Hill – seconded by Meole Brace – want to see that rule consigned to the history books.

And Uffington-based Corbet Arms, with the backing of Reman Services, propose a complete switch in numbers, from the countywide Shropshire divisions on Fridays to the more localised Shrewsbury divisions on Tuesday nights.

They are proposing matches on Fridays are cut from 12-a-side to 10 while Tuesday fixtures go the other way from 10 to 12.

In addition, the same two clubs want to see the promotion and relegation structure change from three up, three down to two up, two down – although prize money would remain the same.

Lastly, Minsterley – with the support of league vice-chairman Graeme Wornell – want to revisit a proposal rejected at last year's annual meeting.

That would allow bowlers to play for different clubs in the Shropshire and Shrewsbury divisions.

League secretary Andy Price said: "The rule changes require a two-thirds majority to be passed. The existing officers are standing again, apart from the welfare officer, where there is a vacancy."

Price has readjusted to life at Pontesbury following the demise of his home village club Ford last year. Now the league faces a period of readjustment.

Hanwood, champions for the last three seasons, finally got over the line in the Shropshire Premier League play-off final to seal a return to the top flight.

That would leave recent arch-rivals Ludlow Castle as the most likely side to take charge of the Tanners league.

Meanwhile, Telford club Sinclair have been quick off the mark in unveiling details of their traditional early season open doubles competition.

The Candlin Doubles will be played as a one-dayer on Sunday, April 10, with a total prize fund of £360.

Limited to 32 pairs at £10 apiece, qualifying sessions are at 10 and 11am and 2 and 3pm, with the last eight to feature in the finals from 6pm.

The winners will receive £150 and entries should go to organiser Stuart Church on 07877 857721 or by email to kevin-hall8@virginmedia.com.
