Hanwood have one foot in the top flight

Hanwood have placed one foot in the Flowfit Shropshire Premier League play-off final after clearing the first hurdle.

They beat Hanmer by nine shots in the pre play-off battle of the Tanners Shropshire and Market Drayton league champions at St Georges.

But, in truth, it was never as close as the scoreline suggests on the Telford club's bottom green.

Hanwood went 17 shots up off the first four, extended the lead to 23 in the middle and it took fine wins by Andy Armstrong, Dan Hughes and captain Dave Ellison to make it respectable for Hanmer.

Now the Shrewsbury villagers must prepare for a possible round-robin game against Donnington Wood – if the Bell Boys can wrap up the Molson Coors Mid Shropshire League title.

Premier spokesman Rob Burroughs said: "The next game in the play-offs will now be Hanwood against Donnington Wood on Wednesday, September 30, at Archibald Worthington.

"That's if Donnington can get the seven points needed at home to Bridgnorth on Thursday which, given their home form, they should do comfortably.

"If Hanwood win that game they will face Archibald Worthington (the Premier wooden spoonists) at a Telford venue on Friday, October 2."

But if County Consolation Cup finalists Donnington were to beat Hanwood, they would then have to play Hanmer.

It would come before the final round-robin table, to decide who features in the play-off final against AWC on October 2.

New Autumn Waterloo champion Greg Smith lost 21-12 to a superb display by Hanmer's Graham Bennett at No 1.

But Hanwood still took control thanks to Wayne Phillips (21-12), Tony Hotchkiss (21-12) and Mark Parsons (21-13).

Phil Lyttle, Dave Burton and Russ Wellings all won in the middle for Hanwood as the atmosphere really warmed up.

And when Danny Wornell came off a 21-11 winner in the back four, it was game over for plucky Hanmer.

Hanwood joint-skipper Mark Shore said: "The game was played in a high spirited and good natured atmosphere with much mutual respect from both teams after the game."
