Callum Wraight wins Portugal bowls title
Shropshire's premier bowler Callum Wraight is celebrating six of the best – after landing a major title in Portugal.
The Castlefields ace claimed the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura, seeing off an elite field to land the £600 first prize.
His run to glory included a 15-9 semi-final defeat of his step-father Rich Goddard before Cumbria's Martin Gilpin was defeated by the same scoreline in the final.
It was Wraight's sixth major tournament victory of the season after his triumphs at Meole Brace, Chadsmoor, the Taylor Bowls Tour event at Donnington Wood, the Shropshire Merit and the Brighouse Classic.
"It was a great week and I'm really chuffed to win it," said Wraight, from Shrewsbury, who turned 26 last week. "It was a good field and to come out on top of and was a nice way to round the season off.
"I've still got a couple of tournaments left but winning this competition was another box ticked."
Wraight, Goddard and last year's winner Colin Beaman all came through qualifying groups to reach the last 16.
Beaman, of Meole Brace, bowed out with a 15-6 defeat to Lynn Pritchatt.
Goddard saw off Barrie Booth and Pritchatt to set up the meeting with his step-son.
But it was Wraight who flew the Shropshire flag to add another title to his glittering CV.
