'A smash and grab' - Rotherham's Steve Evans reflects on Shrewsbury Town's victory

Rotherham boss Steve Evans described Shrewsbury Town's victory at the weekend as a 'smash and grab'.

Salop got back-to-back League One wins for the first time in two years on Saturday as they secured a brilliant 2-1 triumph against the Millers.

The last time Town won two consecutive league matches was back in 2023 when Steve Cotterill was in charge - they beat Oxford 1-0 and Port Vale 3-2

Gareth Ainsworth's side were good value for the points in south Yorkshire, with a stubborn and resilient defensive display.

But Millers' manager, Evans, lambasted his side's defending in the clash saying they made it easy for Salop to score.

He said: "I think we could not have tried to educate our players anymore about their results in recent times that Gareth (Ainsworth) has been able to get at Shrewsbury.

"Very much like at the weekend - a smash and grab. Some big things went in their favour, and decisions went their way. We did not help ourselves by some atrocious defending.

"When you think in that last 20 minutes there is going to be lots of attacking towards their end. We get the equaliser and commit shocking, shocking play defensively.

"And then we lay siege to the goal, but that is why they have been able to beat the likes of Wrexham and Birmingham because they have got people putting bodies on the line, and we did not defend properly, so we have to take this defeat, and move on.

"They have scored easy goals. We have almost helped them. I have watched enough of their football in recent weeks, I am a friend of Gareth's. I have watched them, and he hid nothing from me weeks ago.

"We were together one evening, and he said how they were going to set up, and how they were going to slow it down and be disruptive and take forever. We cannot have enough warnings and do enough training ground work on how they were going to play."
