Bridgnorth rider after a golden double
Bridgnorth's Richard Smith is on top of the world after striking a golden double.
Smith has returned from the 20th World Transplant Games after a successful defence of both Time Trialling and Road Race World Championships.
Wrekinsport Cycling Club's Smith led from the front as coach of the successful 12-strong Great British transplant cycling squad who brought home 17 medals between them from Mar del Plata, Argentina.
This continues an astounding run of victories for the 48 year-old Smith, who received a liver transplant when aged 26, and who was defending world champion holding titles won in South Africa in 2013.
The bi-annual competition has seen him travel to all corners of the globe to compete against the world's best with great success.
After winning gold in the five-kilometre time trial Smith then took victory in the 20-kilometre road race.
He commented: "The performance of all the riders was very impressive and we had five riders who were new to international competition .
"It's gratifying to see the hard work they have put in over the last two years pay off.
"We put great store in the importance of the team competing domestically in time trials and on the road and track against non-transplant riders to ensure we are sharp.
"Equally importantly, we have raised awareness of the success of transplantation and the need for more people to join the organ donor register."
Smith is now looking forward to defending his European titles in Helsinki, Finland in June 2016.
