League chairman Mike Hames said: "The league has come a long way since it started in the 1973/74 season with 25 teams in three divisions for under-13, under-14 and under-16 age groups.

"This year it celebrates 40 years of providing junior football with a turnover of £20,000, 23 charter standard clubs, 167 teams across the age group from under eight to under 16 and over 2,300 players enjoying football in a safe and friendly environment every fixture week.

"The league started as the Shrewsbury & District Sunday Junior Football League, then changed name to the Shropshire County Sunday Junior Football League in 1982 as the number of clubs and their locations spread across the county, before evolving into the SJFL in 2006."

The gala evening, backed by the Shropshire Star, will include a number of presentations recognising the work of clubs and people in the grass roots of junior football.
