Saints lead extended as Harrison eyes up additions

The New Saints have seen their lead at the top of the Welsh Premier increased to six points after closest rivals Airbus UK were deducted one point for fielding an ineligible player.

A disciplinary panel hearing at the FAW in Cardiff handed out the penalty as regards the signing of Andy Jones from Welsh Premier rivals Newtown.

He played in the 1-1 draw at Port Talbot in the league on January 4 while not being correctly registered, and the Wingmakers accepted the charge.

Airbus' point deduction means TNS have tightened their grip further on the chase for the title.

Saints director of football Craig Harrison, however, is not resting on his laurels.

And he admits he could still bolster his squad before the transfer window closes, to add further strength to a Saints squad chasing a record-breaking eighth league title for the club.

"We are approaching deadline day and we will certainly be looking to strengthen," said Harrison. "I feel that during every transfer window it is good to freshen things up.

"And although we have a really strong squad, I am always looking at bringing in more players.

"We are definitely looking at bringing in at least one more player but that has to be the right player.

"The player has to have the right quality and has to be able to fit in with the excellent squad that we already have here.

"I am not going to bring anyone in just so that I can add to the numbers because we have 21 very good footballers at the club.

"We also have four players out on loan (Luke Douglas, Scott Quigley, Ryan Jones and goalkeeper Chris Mullock).

"So in the worst case scenario, I can bring players back from loan if we need them."

The Saints, meanwhile, are due to visit Carmarthen Town in the fourth round of the Welsh Cup tomorrow (sat), but the tie looks likely to fall victim to the recent wet weather with the Richmond Park pitch remaining waterlogged.
