Base is laid for Wolves survival

Wolves owner Steve Morgan is confident that the foundations have been laid to ensure the club will not be one-season wonders in the Barclays Premier League.

Wolves are one point clear of the drop zone after winning five of their opening 20 games and face a crucial clash with fellow strugglers Wigan at Molineux tomorrow.

But Morgan is convinced survival is certainly within reach.

"Establishing ourselves as a fixture in the Premiership is our first priority," he said.

"I was going to say permanent fixture but no-one can guarantee that.

"Newcastle United would have said they were a permanent fixture but they went down.

"I think we are on course for that. Had we have had a fair rub of the green I think we would have been a few more points better off and we would have been sitting in a lot more comfortable position."

Morgan also pointed to a crippling list of injury problems that has meant manager Mick McCarthy has never really had a full squad to choose from as a reason why they are languishing near the foot of the table.

"The injury list has been horrific. It has been one after the other," he added.

"Up until recently our player of the year from last season, Kevin Foley, had hardly kicked a ball.

"Michael Kightly has been out, Stephen Ward had a long spell out, Kevin Doyle was out at the beginning of the season, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was out at one stage.

"Dave Edwards, who had been doing well, is out at the moment.

"Hopefully David and Michael are not too far away from coming back."
