The Wales international has performed impressively in pre-season, after responding to the challenge of fit-again Carl Ikeme and new keeper Marcus Hahnemann.

Ikeme and Hahnemann get the chance to stake their claims in tonight's friendly at Scunthorpe and tomorrow's trip to Wrexham after Hennessey played 90 minutes in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

But McCarthy believes Hennessey, who has played the lion's share of the friendlies, has put down a marker to be first-choice.

The manager said; "Wayne has been excellent in pre-season. I said to him I thought he could have done better with the goal at MK Dons, but so could a couple of others as well.

"That aside, he's had a great pre-season and has been terrific and really looked the part."

Publicly, McCarthy is keeping his first choice under wraps, only saying Ikeme and Hahnemann will get their chance in the next two friendlies.

The Wolves boss added: "They'll be involved in the week,. With the competition for places like we've got in the goalkeeping department, you can't let up and everyone's got to keep their standards high."
